AI use and transparency

Effective date: July 13, 2026

What matters most

  • My strategy, Career insights, and Worth it?: do not send your resume to OpenAI.
  • Guided search+ (Pro): may send resume excerpts, preferences, and job-search context to OpenAI. See section 5 below.
  • Your resume is not used to train a general-purpose AI model. Afterglow uses your information to provide your strategy and saved product features.
  • Afterglow still uses automated matching. Software identifies role, title, and skill signals in your resume and compares them with Afterglow research.
  • You stay in control. You can update your preferences, replace your resume, or delete your account and associated data.

The full policy below covers parsing, storage, vendors, and when our approach may change. It accompanies the Privacy policy.

1. What Afterglow does with your resume

When you upload a PDF or DOCX resume:

  1. Afterglow extracts text on our application servers using document parsing libraries (not an LLM).
  2. The extracted text (and optional original file name) may be stored in your Afterglow account database record so strategy and analysis features can run again without re-uploading.
  3. Your browser may also keep temporary copies in local storage while you use the product.
  4. Afterglow compares that text and your onboarding preferences to curated research: role definitions, title relationships, company-fit research, search queries, and Career Insights packs. That produces personalized outputs.

Why this uses personal information: without your resume content and preferences, Afterglow cannot match you to relevant roles or generate a strategy that reflects your background.

2. Generative AI in My strategy, Career insights, and Worth it?

My strategy, Career insights, and Worth it? run in research mode: they rely on Afterglow-owned curated datasets and application logic, not on calling an external LLM API with your resume.

That means, under the current default:

  • We do not transmit your resume text to OpenAI (or similar LLM APIs) for those features.
  • We do not use your resume to train a general-purpose AI model.
  • Career insights shown in the product come from curated research packs Afterglow maintains, not from a live AI news or scraping feed.

3. Automated processing (not generative AI)

Even without generative AI, Afterglow automatically processes personal data you submit. Examples include:

  • Parsing resume documents into text.
  • Extracting or inferring titles, skills, and role-family signals from that text.
  • Matching you to a supported canonical role in Afterglow's taxonomy.
  • Selecting Career insights cards and building recommended titles, companies, and search queries from research tables.
  • Scoring a pasted job description against your profile for Worth it?.

These outputs are decision-support tools for your job search. They are not binding employment decisions about you. Under GDPR, Afterglow's recommendations are informational; you remain free to disregard them. If you believe a match is wrong, you can edit preferences, re-run onboarding, or request a role via Feedback.

4. Infrastructure that processes data

  • Vercel: hosts the Afterglow web application and provides analytics.
  • Supabase: authenticates users and stores account and career data (including resume text associated with your account).

Generative AI providers are not part of the processing chain for strategy or Worth it?. Guided search+ (Pro) uses OpenAI as described in section 5.

5. Guided search+ (Pro): OpenAI usage

Guided search+ is a structured job-search workflow for Pro subscribers. Unlike My strategy, Guided search+ does call OpenAI's API for certain steps. Your career profile data (synced from onboarding: resume text, LinkedIn URL or paste, and preferences) may be included in those requests.

OpenAI may be used for:

  • Generating a personalized search plan and strategy narrative.
  • Suggesting onboarding preference fields from your resume (when fields are empty).
  • Building company target lists and scoring employers against your profile.
  • Drafting LinkedIn outreach messages and networking angles.
  • Analyzing specific job opportunities within your guided-search workspace.

Each AI run is logged with workflow type, model, and timestamps for quality review. OpenAI is configured for API use; we contractually restrict use of your identifiable content to train general-purpose models to the extent the provider offers that control. See the Privacy Policy for retention and deletion.

You can update underlying data in onboarding and re-sync your profile in Guided search+ without re-entering duplicate forms.

6. Future changes to AI usage

If Afterglow expands generative AI beyond Guided search+ in the live product, we will:

  • Update this policy and the Privacy Policy with the feature name and provider.
  • State what categories of personal information may be sent to that provider.
  • State that we will contractually restrict providers from using your identifiable content to train their general-purpose models, to the extent the provider offers that control.
  • Provide notice or choices required by applicable law.

7. Your controls

  • Do not upload sensitive data that is unrelated to your career search.
  • Edit preferences or re-run onboarding from Account & settings / onboarding.
  • Delete your account from Account & settings to remove associated Afterglow database records.
  • Submit privacy questions via Feedback (start with "Privacy Request").

8. Changes

We will revise the effective date when this policy changes. Material changes to how automated systems or AI process personal information will be reflected here and in the Privacy Policy.
